England coach Wayne Bennett has vowed to lead Brisbane Broncos into the 2017 World Club Series. Plans for the annual clash between the leading clubs from Super League and the NRL were thrown into disarray earlier this week when Melbourne Storm officially withdrew. They were promptly followed by a host of other Australian outfits, who claimed it interfered with their preparations for the new domestic season. Wigan and Cronulla, the two 2016 Grand Final winners, will meet in the traditional World Club Challenge at the DW Stadium on the weekend of February 16-17. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just £6.99. No contract. However, uncertainty surrounds the other two scheduled ties in the recently-expanded World Club Series following the snub from beaten NRL Grand Finalists Melbourne, who were due to play Super League runners-up Warrington.Brisbane had offered to host Wigan if they had lost the Super League Grand Final and Bennett, a long-time advocate of the international game, says he has already been in touch with Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood to reassure him of his clubs commitment to the series. We would be keen to travel, Bennett said. I spoke to Nigel on Monday night and told him that the whole concept has got the clubs backing. We love coming over, weve enjoyed it in the last couple of years as a club and were also trying to host one here in the pre-season. But if that doesnt come to fruition and theres a vacancy to come over to England, we will certainly go.The other clubs have all got their reasons Im sure, but we dont find it interferes with our season really. Bennett also revealed he would have no problem selecting Australia-born players in his England squad Weve played in a Grand Final, gone over for the World Club Series and started the following year well, so I cant find a fault with it. Personally Id be extremely disappointed if we shared the same view.Meanwhile, Bennett said he would have had no qualms about picking Australia-born players in his 24-man squad for the Four Nations Series, even though he opted not to in the end.Twins Brett and Josh Morris, who have both represented the Kangaroos, and Newcastle Knights scrum-half Trent Hodkinson were among a raft of players linked with a switch of allegiance.I was considering any player that was eligible for England, whether they were Australia-born, Australia-based or simply English, Bennett said. It didnt faze me in any way.The speculation got out of control though. It was purely media-driven in this country, I dont know what it was like in England. At the time I said nothing about it but Ill pick the best 24 players to play for England in my opinion. If theyre Australia-based, I would have stood by that. Wigan Warriors will also compete in the World Club Series after winning the 2016 Super League Bennett has been able to call on the local knowledge of assistants Denis Betts, the Widnes head coach, and Paul Anderson, who was in charge of Huddersfield up to July, but insisted he had the last word on selection and defended his decision to ignore Hull hooker Danny Houghton, the 2017 Man of Steel.I wasnt told who to pick, he said. I consulted with people I trust who are well-connected in the game and I watch a lot of the games - it made it a lot easier for me.They were my decisions and my decisions only. I see a fair bit of Super League; I have my own job at the Broncos but the games are shown Friday morning and Saturday morning here - and occasionally Sunday too - so I know whats going on.My job is to pick what I think is the best players and what we need from them. If Houghton has missed out then thats the reason why hes missed out.It doesnt take away from his wonderful achievement in winning Man of Steel - I didnt know I was supposed to pick him because of that. You can watch Englands tour of Bangladesh, plus Premier League football and the British Masters on Sky Sports. Little-used defender Tobias Alderweireld headed home a corner kick for Atletico in the 74th minute to cancel out Samuel Garcias opener. Though Malaga finished with 10 men, Atletico failed to score a winner that would have secured a first league title in 18 years after Elche held Barcelona 0-0. Instead, Atletico travels to the Camp Nou next weekend for a dramatic finale to decide the champion. Atletico leads with 89 points, three better than Barcelona, which means a draw will be enough to pry the championship away from the defending champion, which must win to retain its title. "We still believe in this team. Were Atletico and were going to go there to win," Atletico captain Gabi Fernandez said. "Were used to playing in finals." Madrid, which has 84 points, limped out of the league race following a poor showing in Vigo, where a pair of turnovers allowed Charles to score both goals in a 2-0 win. Madrid faces Atletico in the Champions League final and played as if it was already looking ahead to Lisbon as defensive mistakes by Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso allowed Charles to net easily in each half. Cristiano Ronaldo was sidelined with an injury and Gareth Bale was on the bench, while Sami Khedira and Alvaro Arbeloa returned from long injuries to play. Atleticos attack looked disjointed early on without leading scorer Diego Costa, with replacement David Villa unable to finish three good scoring opportunities -- including early on when the Spain striker found the crossbar. Raul Garcia headed well wide with only Willy Caballero to beat, and the Malaga keeper made key stops from Villa and substitute Diego Ribas after the break. Thibaut Courtois rushed out to cut off Roque Santa Cruzs solo effort on the hour mark, but the Atletico goalkeepers mix-up with defender Miranda allowed Samuel Garcia to get free to head home the opener. WWith nerves starting to creep in, Alderweireld -- filling in for the suspended Diego Godin -- leapt high to head home a corner that allowed home fans to exhale.dddddddddddd Marcos Angeleris second yellow card left Malaga with 10 men from the 88th, and Atletico pushed forward as Jose Sosas free kick narrowly missed the target before Caballero made a leaping finger-tip stop to Adrian Lopezs curling shot. "Its going to be an important game for the club," Atletico coach Diego Simeone said. "Weve reached the last round three points above Barcelona -- nobody would have believed we had a chance to win, but here we are, alive still." Barcelona, which counted itself out of the title race only eight days ago, came out at Elche with intention but eventually seemed to settle for its result when word of Malagas first goal arrived. Andres Iniesta volleyed a shot off the crossbar early on before goalkeeper Manu Herrera got a touch to Lionel Messis effort in the 38th to tip it around the far post. Herrera denied Messi again after the restart, but the defending champions barely threatened again. "Its going to be a great week ahead and for some of us it could be our last game with Barca so it would be a nice way to go out," Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano said. Atletico hasnt lost to Barcelona this season, drawing in four matches before finally beating the Catalans in the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinals. Two teams will join Real Betis in being relegated to the second division on the last day after Almeria and Getafe secured victories to improve their chances of staying up. Real Valladolid allowed Betis to rally back three times before eventually losing 4-3 to the last-place club. Almeria, which won 2-0 at Granada, and Getafe -- a 1-0 winner over Sevilla -- share 39 points. Granada has 38 points ahead of its finale at Valladolid, which is tied on 36 points with Osasuna in the final two drop places. Osasuna drew 1-1 at Espanyol. Athletic Bilbao and Real Sociedad drew 1-1 in a Basque derby.
